Eggnog and Fresh Berries

12/28/2014

‘Tis the season to gulp the eggnog.  I did my share.  Still, there was enough left from the quart container to do more.

As a mixed berry eater, my wife brings containers of strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries home from the supermarket, then mixes them up in a large bowl.  As you might expect, you don’t always get sweet berries.  Sometimes the raspberries are good and the blueberries are tart; other times the blueberries are plump and luscious and the blackberries sour your face.

You never know.  To be safe, and get rid of the residual eggnog, I decided to pour some on the berries for lunch one day.  It was enough to coat each spoonful with just enough sweetness to ward off the sour of any of the berries.  The eggnog complemented the specific flavor of each berry, kind of like homemade whipped cream would do, but using the eggnog made me feel more righteous about the season.

So if you have some of the holiday beverage left in your refrigerator, pull it out.  Pour it on your mixed berry bowl (or any other fruit mix for that matter).  It will liven up the taste and you won’t be pulling the eggnog out of the refrigerator February 22, wondering what that stink was for the past four weeks.
