Grape Juice and Ginger Ale

It’s good to have brothers because they jog your memory.  Just the other night this happened.  One of our cousins was visiting and we hadn’t seen her for 15-20 years.  So the storytelling was flowing.

For some reason, my brother recounted a drink mixture our mom gave us as a kid when we went to the beach in New Jersey.  We’d ride waves, then for lunch we’d have bologna sandwiches, chips, some fruit, and this special drink.  I’m not sure whether mom spent time experimenting or had it passed down to her, but either way, it tasted great.

In our conversation with our cousin, I said I had made it for our kids, and they vehemently denied this.  “No way, dad, you never made that for us.”  So now I plan to make it for them.

First though, I will share it with you.  Buy a jar of Welch’s Grape Juice.  Buy some ginger ale.  Mix them equal parts over ice.  Taste.  Does it make you burp and your eyes water?  Does it give you a perfect tangy taste on your tongue afterwards?  If so, you’ve got it down.

Share it with your kids.  Bring it on picnics.  Pass it down.
